A hidden geohazard...

in the Spokane area is the occurrence of radon gas.

    Yes, Spokane does have pockets of soil-gas radon. It may be the cause of her lung cancer. Or,.....it may be that her dad was a nuclear engineer at Hanford. I picture Homer Simpson coming home with radiation in his pocket.
