What I'm reading...

right now:  The Art of Raising a Puppy by The Monks at New Skete.  Why, you ask?

Rachel adopted this Australian Cattle Dog mix - a Red Heeler - just a week ago, now only nine weeks old, and now named Helen (in homage to Rachel's aunt):

  1. Helen is adorable. May I suggest another dog book you may find interesting and informative? "Inside a Dog, what dogs see, smell and know" it's written by Alexandra Horowitz, who is a cognitive scientist and teaches psychology at Barnard College. Cool stuff.

  2. Just read this same book myself a month ago. Plus, I'm going through the rest of the library's stash of dog training books. The "new school" of dog training is strictly positive reinforcement, using lots of treats (appropriately given along with immediate feedback) when the desired behavior is exhibited. There are also lots of DVD's on dog training that helps demonstrate the basics of this type of training. I'm reading "The Dog Rules" by Kyra Sundance right now, so far, so good. I'm using this method with Lexi. How's the housebreaking going? I'm sure she'll catch on fast with such intelligent trainers showing her the ropes.

  3. Robin, how about a play date? She's already out-lasted (energetically) a ten-year-old wiener dog and an 8-month-old lab/great Dane. Marcy, we've also got Cesar Millan. I'm somewhere between him and the all-praise schools of training.

  4. She looks great!
Try this book for another point of view (dogs point of view) "the art of racing in the rain" by Garth Stein. It's really good.
